MITRA – A WILBUR 34’ EXTENDED FLYBRIDGE CRUISER

Description/Comment

MITRA was custom built by Wilbur Yachts in the mecca of Downeast boat building, Southwest Harbor. Her owner (Cruising Club of America member; 100 ton licensed master) has had a long multi-boat relationship with Wilbur Yachts over the years and on this boat, it shows. Her classic bronze ports, rub rails and strakes, cleats and bollard along with fine teak detailing, inside and out, speak to her enduring quality. She has been recently and extensively upgraded by her builders.

Layout

This extended pilothouse model has an aft bookcase and seven foot settee to port. The latter pulls out to sleep two comfortably without impeding the companionway. There are three storage drawers below. The salon has new (2008) and attractive laminated cork flooring for comfort and additional sound suppression. To starboard, is the helm station with custom double seat and large stowage beneath for two teak folding chairs and cockpit table. This pilothouse layout provides privacy for two couples or for families with children.

Going forward, removable doors close off the companionway. A large head, with shower, medicine cabinet, and abundant storage is to starboard. The toilet is a Wilcox Crittenden “Skipper”. The galley, opposite to port, features a stainless “Princess” 3-burner propane stove with oven. The stainless steel counter sink is centered, with a Norcold refrigerator adjacent. Above the counter are three stowage lockers with sliding doors which amply contain all crockery and food. Under-counter drawers provide stowage for other galley items. “Revere” stainless pots and pans stow in lockers above and below the stove. There is additional galley stowage under the companionway steps. The propane valve and CO2 detector are mounted above the counter, in the cook’s line of sight.

Forward of the head is a large hanging locker with a sizeable bulkhead mounted mirror. Lockers exist both p & s under the “V” berth for additional gear. The berth is sized for 6’ plus and with a filler cushion, makes a generous double berth. There is an optional privacy curtain. Access to the rope/chain locker is via a teak framed door at the berth foot.

All interior trim is handsomely finished in satin varnished teak. The cabin sole is traditional solid teak and holly. The cockpit sole and opening hatch also boast the traditional touch: hand-laid western fir, raised above the level of the aft scuppers. Under a cockpit seal is the dual cylinder propane system. A handsome teak step-storage box is part of the inventory.

The flybridge has two sets of back-to-back seats with “Sunbrella” weather covers in hull-matching green, the same color carried in the folding bimini top. A destroyer type wind deflector is mounted below the bridge coaming.

Engine Room

MITRA’s 420 HP Yanmar 6LY2H-STE turbo-diesel drives a 1 ¾” shaft, with dripless log and five-bladed prop. Access to the engine space is aided by gas-powered struts attached to the hinged, sound insulated hatches. Engine has a custom starboard side exhaust and Racor fuel filtering. A bow thruster is available to assist maneuvering in tight situations. The engine space is fitted with lights and blowers.

Capacities

MITRA carries 208 gallons of fuel, a generous 150 gallons of water and 20 gallons in her holding tank, served by an approved “Y” valve. Instrumentation includes fuel and water gauges.

Mechanical

This boat has a 3kw Westerbeke generator with dedicated battery, to power the “Cruiserair” reverse cycle A/C and to provide emergency starting of the main engine.

Safety

MITRA has three automatic bilge pumps with monitor and controls at the helm station. A “Lifesling” is mounted on the flybridge and a horseshoe float in the cockpit. Required life vests are at the ready. Also included are two Stearns immersion suits together with a stocked “abandon ship” bag. The Wilbur teak swim platform has a stern access ladder and a portable weighted teak emergency boarding ladder. MITRA has all required fire extinguishers.

Inflatable Dinghy

Inclusion of an 8’ AVON RIB dinghy with a recently added 4-stroke Yamaha outboard with remote tank and stowage makes side trip adventures easy. If not towed on its special pennant, the dinghy can be supported astern on Atkins and Hoyle aluminum davits with custom bracing. A Lewmar winch facilitates raising and lowering.

Instrumentation

The flybridge panel includes a Constellation compass and engine stop/start controls, together with a Brooks & Gatehouse speed, time, depth and distance repeater. An ICOM loud hailer is mounted in the console locker and the flybridge instrumentation includes a spotlight outlet and dual-trumpet airhorn control.

Below, there is a Garmin 2006 C chart plotter, 4kw Raymarine radar with pole-mounted 24” dome at the rear of the flybridge. The RDF is an ICOM and the AUTOHELM autopilot is equipped with remote control. Time, speed, depth and distance are provided by a B&G “QUAD” system. The main steering compass is a large Danforth Constellation. The Simpson Lawrence rope/chain windlass has both deck and steering station controls. Chain is 150’ of hi-test 5/16. Working anchor is a 35 lb. CQR. A lighter Danforth is secured on the house-top.

Electrical Power

There are two new 4-D batteries for engine start and house requirements. The two forward hi-output batteries can be switched in line with the main bank for emergency starting power. Battery monitor and charge control is by HART. At dockside, a shore power connector with adapters feeds the split AC and DC main control panel, which also contains generator start and metering. The panel is provided with red night illumination.

Miscellaneous Equipment

MITRA’s sale inventory includes three Waterhog mats and a woven rope entrance mat, a canister vacuum and other cleaning tools. Manuals on all equipment are organized in labeled files together with many spares for lights, circuits, engine and generator. Beneath the cockpit hatch is stowage for six dock lines and the “Fortress” take-apart storm anchor. Also included are a set of signal flags, ensign with teak staff and an ss pulpit pole for a club pennant. There are five fenders with covers in hull-matching green with stowage beneath the side deck.

In short, MITRA is unusually well provided with quality gear for safe, comfortable cruising.
